ABOUT MRS. ZECHES |
The 2022-23 school year marks my 4th at Davis Drive Middle and 17th year teaching. I originally moved to North Carolina from California in 1996 and attended Fayetteville Technical Community College and UNC Pembroke. In 2002, my husband’s Air Force career took us to Europe. While living in The Netherlands I was able to begin my teaching career as a substitute teacher in the AFNORTH International School. Having been a certified fitness instructor for nearly five years, I took my experience as a substitute teacher and knowledge of fitness to the International School of Maastricht, where I taught physical education to students from 38 Nationalities. Having been immersed in this environment for over two years, I gained the unique experience of teaching children to work as cohesive teams through cultural and language barriers.

One of my proudest accomplishments is when I led over 50 students from 10th and 11th grade on a winter survival trip for a week in the mountains of Switzerland. The challenge pushed the guides, teachers and students both mentally and physically to accomplish multiple survival tasks. In 2005 we moved back to the United States, to Omaha, Nebraska, where I completed my middle school teacher certification in both science and language arts at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. I immediately began teaching, first 6th Grade and then 8th Grade science, in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2009, I enrolled at Doane College to pursue a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and continued teaching 8th grade until my husband retired from the Air Force and we moved back to North Carolina for his post retirement job in 2011. In 2017, I completed my AIG certification at UNC Charlotte.
From 2012 to 2018 I taught 6th grade science as well as botany and ecology at Fred J. Carnage Magnet Middle School and spent one year teaching science and ELA at West Lake Middle School. I am super excited to share my passion for science with my students at Davis Drive Middle School; the 8th grade science curriculum is amazing and I know that it will entice my students to question the world around them and be curious about natural occurrences on our planet.
On a personal note I have been married to my husband, Rod, for 32 years and we have two daughters that we are extremely proud of. Savannah is a graduate of UNC Wilmington, currently works as a technical editor at a Relias publishing company is married & gave me my 1st grandson in February. Kaysie graduated from UNC Charlotte in 2017, got married in September and works at Mutual Of Omaha Insurance in Omaha, Nebraska. I also have a new puppy that I love named Atlas.
